No Shame - Lily Allen
★★★★★
(5 out of 5 stars) Lily Allen's fourth album is here! 'No Shame' is out! I am beyond excited, proud and in love!! Lily has worked so hard over the last few years and been through hell and back and has made an outstanding album. You never know what to expect from Lily, and this album was the same. All I knew was it was going to be killer, and she did not disappoint. I'm going to go through the album and briefly talk about each song!
We kick the album off with one of my fav tracks, 'Come On Then'. Which couldn't be more Lily. This song assures us that the Lily Allen we fell in love with over 10 years ago is still here, just stronger. The chorus is so catchy and was going around in my head for days (weeks) after seeing her perform it live at one of her exclusive shows she did before the album was released. Next is the first song which was released from the album, 'Trigger Bang' featuring Giggs! I'm so glad this was the first song we heard from the album. It set the tone. It makes you wanna cut all the negative people out your life. This song is a certified bop. The third song on the album is 'What You Waiting For?' This is new vibe Lily and we love her. Although new, she is still her honest self. Which is why this is a good song because she isn't rhyming hey with baby. Her lyrics are real. Then 'Your Choice' featuring Burna Boy. Ain't we all been there lmao. "I've always said a man can't own me" Love love this one! Their voices go so well together. If you haven't checked out their collaboration on Burna's album you must, it's called 'Heaven's Gate'. The fifth track is 'Lost My Mind' this song makes me feel some kinda way. "Now I'm stuck in a rut, kicking stones, looking at my phone all night" Honestly queen of upbeat instrumentals with sad lyrics. If you ever feel shit this is the song you now go to, to know you're not the only one. This song has secured a spot in my heart forever. Next is 'Higher', firstly big up Dan on the first verse! Killed it. Lily's vocals are so pure and beautiful. Easily mistaken for a song about a romantic relationship but actually about a business relationship. Which I think makes the song more powerful. When that little beat drops and she repeats "higher, higher, higher" it's perfect for a slow twerk. Trust. "I won't be undermined". Seventh is 'Family Man', this song is perfect. From production to lyrics, you can't fault it. One of many tear jerkers. Beautiful. We're half way through the album and if you're waiting for a weak link, this album doesn't have one. Next up is 'Apples' another fav of mine. Raw lyrics, beautifully stripped back and outstanding vocals. This secures this song as one of the best on the album. This song also shows how much Lily has matured as a person and as an artist, as one does in 12 years. Then 'Three' A truly beautiful song from the perspective of her daughters. Lyrical genius. Papier-mâché fish merch soon come? "When things feel black and white, we'll do some colouring in" If you've got kids and work this will probably make you cry, and even if you don't, you will probably still cry. Tenth song is 'Everything To Feel Something', the haunting vocals at the top of the song give me chills. It is one of, if not the most heartbreaking on the album. But sadly relatable for a lot of us. And this is why we need Lily Allen. To make real honest relatable music so we feel a little less alone. We then go back up beat to 'Waste' featuring Lady Chann. I had the privilege to see them both perform this at Notting Hill Carnival last summer, and have been dying to get this song on my phone since!! They go too hard!!! An iconic collaboration. I can't help but smile and dance when I listen to this song! 'My One' As Lily sings "my number one" repeatedly through the song it's hard to believe Lily didn't write this song after me!? The verses are also killer!! All the different pet names and cities. And I think Lily rhyming 'Vancouver' and 'Uber' could be my fav Lily rhyme since 'alfresco' and 'Tesco'. This has to be one of my favs from the album. The penultimate song, 'Pushing Up Daisies' about growing old with someone you love. This song makes my stubbornly independent self wanna fall in love, which I hate.. but also love. Such an adorable love song but it's Lily so it's with a twist, it's still hilarious, with NHS and Daily Mail name drops and one of my fav lines, "swanning round here in my slippers and dressing gown, hope you'd give me a dressing down". We end the album with 'Cake', thankfully we were blessed with another Lily feminist anthem. "Stick to your guns girl, in fact go get that riffle" It is the perfect track to end the album. There is no way I can't give this album five stars. My favourite song from the album changes constantly which for me proves how good the album is. None of the tracks blatantly stand out because they are all perfect and all stand their own. Every track has its message and point and is beautiful and powerful in its own way. I have seen the majority of the album live, some songs three times and I have to say this album sounds insane live! If you get the chance to see Lily sing No Shame live DO IT! Somehow Lily has managed to find the balance of such a new sound but still with that classic Lil we love. I think this just might be her best album yet. Her majesty is back.
