Yesterday Was Forever - Kate Nash
★★★★★
(5 out of 5 stars)
Kate Nash's fourth album 'Yesterday Was Forever' has arrived. It's been 5 years since her last album 'Girl Talk' which was very VERY hard to top but she's done it!!! People have said, and even Kate herself, that this album is a mixture of her last three but with also a completely brand new vibe. And I agree, you hear Kate's first album 'Made Of Bricks' in 'Take Away'. 'Musical Theatre' sounds related to 'Mansion Song' and 'Don't You Want to Share the Guilt?' from Kate's second album 'My Best Friend Is You'. And 'Always Shining' would fit perfectly on Kate's third album 'Girl Talk'. Despite this, this album stands its own and could possibly be my favourite.. it is too early to tell now but it's putting up a good fight. My exceptions were high for this album and they were definitely met, Kate's talents just keep growing. Now let's brief break down each song!
We start the album perfectly with 'Life In Pink' which is a BOP and has a fucking awesome music video!! This is a classic Nash song. And I couldn't think of a better song to start the album. Second is 'Call Me' which is the perfect song to send to a friend, family member or loved one. Such a beautifully heartbreaking song but filled with hope and being there for each other.
Next up is 'Take Away', we love a double meaning. Mixing two beautiful things; love and food, 'supersize your love'. How is Kate such a lyrical genius?! Then comes 'Hate You' which is currently my favourite song on the album. The order of my favs does change regularly but right now this song is excalty what I need and everything about it is perfect. Like Kate did THAT!! Completely obsessed with this. We LOVE a sickly sweet happy sounding pop song which is about HATE.
Followed by a VERY strong trio, first another BOP, 'Drink About You', this song just makes me wanna JUMP!! It's a singalong and dancealong tune that spills the T. Then 'Body Heat' which I feel is a more mature version of 'Pumpkin Soup'. I'm loving this unexpected sexy tune!! Got me feeling myself!! 'Karaoke Kiss' is the perfect melo yet bop-y pop song that makes you feel some kinda way. Time to get down to the karaoke bar.
If you feel your brain is a little fucked up (so I'm talking to everyone) then 'Musical Theatre' should make you feel less alone. With mental health being a strong theme throughout the album which Kate has never been afraid to talk about, this album couldn't be anymore important, and this song is the perfect example. What I love about this song is the amazing spoken word. A lyric in the song, 'gotta keep holding on', which we sure have in the era of President Fart.
In 'California Poppies', the sweet high-note happy pop verses contrasting with the more punk-y angry loud screaming chorus clashes perfectly and shows in just one song how diverse her style and voice is. (Oh and Kate you are an inspiration) 'Always Shining' is the humble, slow, peaceful song of the album and fills me with so many emotions. Kate confirms she is my mother on 'Today'. One of my favourite tracks on the album, one lyric stands out particularly for me; "I know you think you haven't got time but you've got your whole life"
'Twisted Up' is when ya got them feels and makes you feel warm inside with the chorus and then more rock-y verses gives this song the kick above your average lovely-dubby pop song. Completed with wolves howls. The penultimate song is 'My Little Alien' which was the first song we heard from the album, back in 2016 now, so I've been listening to this song for a while. It is a super sweet song and is perfect for anyone who loves their pet, and also one of Kate's favourite from the album! Finally to end the album, 'To the Music I Belong' which is the perfect song for anyone who loves music and for which it plays an important part in your life. The best way to end the album. To Yesterday Was Forever I Belong.
Overall what I get from the album is, yes life is hard, and sometimes really sucks but you can do it. You are strong and we have got this. And that's what I love about Kate.
Almost every song on the album makes me wanna cry and all in good ways. Kate is a lyrical genius and she puts her whole heart and soul into her music which makes this album so special, unique, powerful and relatable.
Over a decade later and she's still got it! So fuck the haters who think Kate is just 'Foundations', she is so much more, always has been, always will be. She's killing it, and remember kids you don't have to be Number One to be Number One, riddle that one xo
